a16z Top 100 exposes consumer AI’s spending gap

The seventh Top 100 adds U.S. card spending to web and mobile rankings. The split is sharp: 29 of the top 50 vendors by observed spend appear on neither traffic list, while the top 1% of payers generate 19.5% of spend. Why it matters: Consumer AI’s first durable market looks like prosumers buying tools to build, create, and work—not mass-market chat alone. Product teams should measure reach, repeat use, and paid intensity separately; startups can still win through specialization, multi-model products, vertical trust, or interfaces incumbents cannot easily copy.

Try this: Compare one AI product’s traffic rank, spending rank, and business model, then write a one-sentence diagnosis of whether its advantage comes from reach, paid intensity, or both.
