Claude Personal Finance adds read-only Plaid bank connect for US Pro, Max, and Ultra
Anthropic introduced Personal Finance in Claude: users can connect bank and card accounts and ask about their money in their own words. Access is read-only; Personal Finance cannot move, manage, or invest money. Anthropic says there are no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Claude does not offer credit cards, loans, or savings accounts of its own. The beta is rolling out this week for Pro, Max, and Ultra plans in the US. Accounts connect through Plaid; the user signs into the bank, and Claude does not ask for or see the bank password. For connected accounts Claude can see the bank name, each account's name, type and last four digits, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transactions. Chats in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic's models; accounts can be unlinked anytime. Anthropic notes that Claude can make mistakes, so users should ask which transactions sit behind a number and check important figures with their bank, and that the feature is not designed to give investment advice. An example scenario in the post shows a month totaling $4,309.37 (more than half rent and utilities, $1,024.51 food and drink) and $1,393.22 left before payday — figures from Anthropic's illustrative example, not population statistics. Anthropic says it is exploring work with licensed professionals and regulated firms next and inviting banks and wealth managers to help shape it. Why it matters: Read-only bank access via Plaid turns Claude into a natural-language audit layer over up to two years of transactions, useful for spotting double charges or category drift without opening every banking app. The tradeoff is sensitive data inside a chat product that Anthropic itself says can mis-sum, limited for now to US paid plans. The tension is not whether Claude can wire money — it cannot — but whether handing balances, credit limits and two years of history to a model that can err is worth the convenience for your household.
Try this: If you are on Claude Pro, Max, or Ultra in the US and Personal Finance appears in the sidebar, connect one low-risk account first. For any total Claude returns, ask which transactions make it up, then check that total against your bank statement before you rely on it. If you are outside the US or on a free plan, skip for now and watch for the licensed-professional and bank partnership step Anthropic says it is exploring.
