Anthropic's amended IPO filing says it may soon meet its own threshold for AI-accelerated AI research

Anthropic filed Amendment No. 1 to its S-1 with the SEC on Nov 2, a week after the Oct 26 original. A new risk-factor passage says internal estimates for future models, not current ones, indicate the company "may imminently meet" its Responsible Scaling Policy's definition of "dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI". It adds that no current model has been designated as exceeding that threshold. An existing sentence also changed: "we may not identify" a significant acceleration until after it has occurred became "we have in the past not identified, and may in the future not identify" one. Another new line says Anthropic does not anticipate being able to safely use Claude to "fully autonomously design and build successive generations of frontier models without meaningful human supervision or understanding, if and when that becomes technically possible", and that it is considering updates to the policy to keep humans in control. Why it matters: Anthropic is telling investors, in a legal filing, that its estimates for future models put it close to a threshold its own safety policy sets for AI-driven acceleration, and that in the past it did not notice such an acceleration until after it had happened. The same filing sells that loop as a business strength: it calls models helping build the next model "one of the most significant structural advantages in frontier AI". The company that gains from the speed-up is also the one deciding when it has arrived. A risk factor in an IPO filing is also written to limit legal exposure, so it is a warning, not a measurement.

Try this: Open the S-1/A source and search it for "imminently" and "closing the loop". Read the risk passage next to the strategy passage, then put Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy page on your watch list, since the filing says Anthropic will release further reports on this threshold.
